There are many new materials which have flooded the market in the last 100 years for the manufacture of rugs from plant based ones to synthetic. They all have their advantages and we have put together a handy guide for you to understand these a little better.
Nylon
A synthetic alternative to the natural fibres, nylon is extremely durable and versatile. A good quality Nylon rug such as the ones found in our shop can easily last for decades.
Nylon has yarn memory too, which leaves it unaffected by footprints and can therefore endure heavy traffic. It is kid and pet friendly, it does not show dirt easily and it is resistant to abrasion.
The downside of Nylon is that it is water absorbent, so if there is any accidental spill it must be cleaned immediately, as it could potentially damage that area.
Polyester and Polypropylene
Is a versatile and stain resistant material, more so perhaps than Nylon. It is one of the most renowned and used synthetic yarns for rug and carpet manufacturing.
Polyester and Polypropylene rugs can be indoor and outdoor rugs. At Ocean Rugs we have both types of rug and the flexibility of their use will be specified on the rug at the time of purchase. Please do not use an indoor rug outdoors unless it is specified on the description as you risk damaging your beautiful rug.
Decolan
Decolan is the new addition into this category and it is a high quality heat set polypropylene yarn. Rugs made with Decolan are densely woven, clean well and do not shed.
Many of our rugs are made from synthetic materials. We are committed to remain on the cutting edge of rug technology and provide the highest quality and the highest standard to our customers with every purchase. There is a detailed description with each of our rugs which is a testament of our transparency to our customers.
Investment in new technologies enables the rug manufacturing industry to provide synthetic materials which are hypoallergenic and more resilient than some natural fibres.
